Architects of Modern Hardstyle Energy

Origins and Formative Years

The story of Frequencerz began in the mid-2000s in the Netherlands, the undisputed cradle of the harder styles of electronic music. Niels Koster (born July 30, 1985) and Pepijn Hol (born July 6, 1987) were both raised in an environment where dance music was more than just a hobby—it was a cultural phenomenon.

While specific details of their early family life remain private, both artists displayed a deep-seated fascination with rhythm and synthesis during their youth. They crossed paths in their local music scene, discovering a shared frustration with the formulaic nature of Hardstyle at the time. Seeking to inject more “drive” and “atmosphere” into their productions, they joined forces in 2008, officially forming Frequencerz.

The Ascent: Defining the “Raw” Revolution

Frequencerz didn’t just join the Hardstyle scene; they helped redirect its course. Their early releases on the Fusion Records label, such as “Phaser” and “Drivers License,” immediately set them apart. While the genre was largely split between “Euphoric” (melodic) and “Raw” (aggressive) sounds, Frequencerz proved that these two worlds could coexist.

Their career trajectory hit a massive milestone with the release of “Wolfpack” (in collaboration with Tartaros and MC Jeff). This track became more than just a hit; it became an anthem that defined their brand and their relationship with their audience. The “Wolfpack” moniker evolved into a symbol of unity within the harder styles community, representing a loyal, global following that traveled across continents to witness their high-intensity sets.

Strategic Alliances and “Roughstate”

In 2015, Frequencerz took a bold step toward independence and industry leadership. Alongside fellow titans Ran-D, Adaro, and B-Front, they co-founded Roughstate Music. This label was not merely a business venture but a creative collective designed to maintain high production standards and creative freedom within the genre.

Through Roughstate, Frequencerz released their seminal album, Medium Rare (2016). The album was a masterclass in versatility, featuring tracks that ranged from the festival-ready “Bitch” to more complex, experimental soundscapes. The success of the album led to them hosting their own “X-Qlusive” event at AFAS Live in Amsterdam—one of the highest honors a Hardstyle artist can achieve, cementing their status as A-list icons.

Artistic Influences and Philosophy

Frequencerz’s music is heavily influenced by the cinematic and the theatrical. They often cite the energy of early 90s rave culture and the complexity of modern sound design as their primary inspirations.

In various interviews, Niels and Pepijn have emphasized the “vibe” of the crowd as their ultimate muse. Unlike producers who work in a vacuum, Frequencerz famously tested their unfinished tracks at major festivals, using the real-time reaction of the audience to tweak their kicks and melodies. This iterative process ensured that every release was “dancefloor-certified” before it ever hit digital shelves.

Transitions and Recent Milestones

As of the current year, 2026, the Frequencerz project has undergone a significant and emotional transition. After nearly two decades of touring the globe together, Pepijn Hol made the personal decision to step away from the grueling life of international travel and live performances to focus on new ventures and his personal life.

The project continues under the guidance of Niels Koster, who has maintained the Frequencerz banner with the same vigor that defined their early years. This new chapter has seen a return to a “pure” Hardstyle sound, characterized by the 2024-2025 releases that focus on technical innovation and high-fidelity soundscapes, proving the brand’s resilience and enduring relevance in a rapidly changing industry.
