Architects of Emotion in Modern Drum & Bass

Origins and Early Lives
Joshua White
Joshua White was born in England and raised in Hertfordshire. From a young age, White displayed a fascination with rhythm and electronic music production. Growing up during the late 1990s and early 2000s—a formative period for drum and bass and UK bass culture—he was exposed to the genre’s pioneers and underground radio culture.
White began DJing and producing music in his teenage years under the alias Haste, experimenting with harder and more aggressive forms of drum and bass before eventually gravitating toward melodic and atmospheric styles.
Matthew Lowe
Matthew Lowe was born in Yorkshire, England, where he developed his own interest in electronic music production. Lowe began releasing music under the alias Sensa, producing heavier dancefloor drum and bass and performing at club events across the UK.
Lowe’s early work showed technical sophistication and a strong understanding of rhythm programming, but like White, he began to feel creatively drawn toward more melodic, emotionally expressive music.
Formation of Hybrid Minds
White and Lowe met in the late 2000s through the Ruthless Soundz radio station, where both were active DJs. Their shared enthusiasm for drum and bass initially revolved around heavier styles, but conversations between the two soon revealed a mutual admiration for more soulful and atmospheric music.
In 2011, the pair collaborated on a track titled “The Place.” The song quickly gained attention when uploaded to influential online drum and bass platforms, earning hundreds of thousands of plays and introducing the pair to an international audience.
Encouraged by the response, White and Lowe formally launched their joint project under the name Hybrid Minds, signaling their desire to merge diverse musical influences—electronic rhythm, emotional songwriting, and cinematic sound design.
Early Releases and Breakthrough (2012–2014)
Hybrid Minds made their official debut with a series of EP releases in 2012, including the “Hybrid Minds” and “Heartfelt” EPs. Their early tracks immediately distinguished them from their peers.
While much of drum and bass at the time focused on high-energy dancefloor impact, Hybrid Minds emphasized:
- lush harmonic arrangements
- melancholic melodies
- expressive vocal collaborations
- cinematic atmospheres
Their song “Lost” became an early standout, introducing audiences to the duo’s signature blend of rolling drum patterns and emotional storytelling.
Debut Album – Mountains

The album showcased their distinctive sound:
- soulful piano lines
- atmospheric pads
- heartfelt vocal performances
- carefully crafted drum programming
Tracks like “Meant to Be”, “Halcyon,” and “Mountains” quickly became fan favorites and solidified Hybrid Minds as leading innovators in melodic drum and bass.
Artistic Evolution and International Recognition (2015–2019)

Notable tracks from the album included:
