Moby’s Rare 1980s Hand-Drawn DJ Demo Cassette Auction

Long before Moby sold tens of millions of records, he was pounding the pavement in Manhattan. Back in the late 1980s, the bedroom producer carried home-recorded cassettes from club to club. He handed them directly to promoters, hoping a tape might land him a paying DJ residency. Now, an ultra-rare artifact from that hustle has officially surfaced for public auction. Music culture platform Wax Poetics just opened bidding on an original, handmade Moby DJ demo cassette. Dating back to roughly 1987 or 1988, the one-of-a-kind tape provides an intimate window into dance music history.
