Report Says Explicit Lyrics are Down Significantly on Streaming Charts

The songs dominating Spotify today look noticeably different from those topping the charts just a few years ago.

According to a new analysis by data writer Daniel Parris for Stat Significant, the share of songs carrying Spotify’s Explicit label has fallen dramatically since 2018. While explicit tracks once accounted for nearly three-quarters of Spotify’s Top 50, they now represent only a small fraction of the chart.

Rather than suggesting artists are suddenly avoiding profanity, the data points to a broader shift in what listeners are choosing to stream—and how streaming itself has evolved.
