UK festivals produce somewhere between 23,500 and 25,800 tonnes of waste every year. That is not a vague environmental concern you can file away with good intentions. It is a concrete, measurable consequence of the way a significant proportion of the British public behaves when given a few days off and a field to sleep in.

The numbers are grim. The average festival-goer generates around 2kg of waste per day. Over five million UK residents attend at least one festival per year, joined by more than a million overseas visitors. Do the arithmetic and you arrive at a figure that should give anyone pause, yet somehow never does.
